Southern Sudan’s ruling party have signed a deal with a key opposition party from the north, the Umma party of former Prime Minister Sadiq al Mahdi.
The deal lays down several key areas of agreement between the Umma party and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, or SPLM.
It is also being seen as an important alliance ahead of national elections in April.
Weekend Network Africa's Peter Martell was there to watch the signing ceremony late on Saturday night in the southern capital Juba, from where he sends this report.
