Celebrations are underway in Libya to mark 40 years since Muammar Gaddafi took power in a bloodless coup.
The controversial leader has ruled his country with an iron fist and, until recently, been a pariah for his alleged backing of rebel groups both in and outside Africa.
Recently there has been a warming of international relations - although no western leaders will be among the heads of state attending these festivities.
