West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS has called for an extra-ordinary summit of heads of state to be held next month to address the crisis in Niger.
The call was made at a mediation and Security Council meeting which ended in Abuja last night.
The body said it's concerned about President Mamadou Tandja's violation of his country's Constitution, as well as ECOWAS rules on Democracy and Good governance.
Mr. Tandja conducted a controversial referendum after declaring emergency powers thus enebling him to change the constitution, virtually guaranteeing an extention to his rule.
The group had earlier threatened to sanction the government in Niger should it violate that country's constitution.
From Abuja, the BBC's Chris Ewokor reports.
