The Sudanese government has hit back at criticisms of its human rights record - saying that things are improving.

The comments came after the United Nations special rapporteur for Sudan, Sima Samar, told the UN's Human Rights Council that the situation in the country remains critical.

Her report documents widespread rights abuses against activists, aid workers and other civilians.

So what exactly is the government saying?

Damian Zane spoke to Dr Tajussir Mahjoub, Sudan's Minister for Planning.
