The transitional government in Somalia say it is trying to re-establish a navy to patrol the country's coasts.
According to the authorities recruits are already undergoing training.
The move is being seen as an attempt by the government of Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed to add some home-grown support to international efforts to combat piracy in Somali waters.
