African leaders are being challenged to use the current global economic downturn as an opportunity to develop shared partnership with donors and trading partners alike.
The call came from the former UN boss Kofi Annan who chairs a group called the Africa Progress Panel (APP).
At the launch of its annual report today in Cape Town the group said that the financial crisis has underscored Africa's vulnerability, notwithstanding a decade of solid progress.
The key conclusion of the report is that Africa needs to drive its own development agenda as the basis for partnership and shared responsibility for progress
