Zimbabwe's finance minister Tendai Biti has warned that the country's unity government could collapse if sharp differences over the future of the controversial central bank governor, Gideon Gono, are not resolved.

Mr Biti's party, the Movement for Democratic Change, led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, has been pushing for Mr Gono's removal saying that he is a major obstacle to the attempts to resolve Zimbabwe's economic crisis.

But as the bitter wrangle continues, in a new twist, the country's powerful military and police service chiefs have declared their support for the embattled central bank chief.

Zimbabwean journalist Brian Hungwe reports.
