Two hundred and forty four people have been killed in heavy battles between rival Arab tribes and security forces in Sudan's southern Kordofan state.
It's a semi-arid region lying on the border between north and south Sudan where conflict is common. The scale of the fighting and the numbers of those killed have shocked many.
