After only a fortnight in office, President Zuma's government is dealing with what trade unions have dubbed a "labour time bomb".

Among those on strike are state doctors who are demanding a 70% salary increase.

The labour unrest comes just before the publication of economic figures today which will show if sub-Saharan Africa's economic power house South Africa, is officially in recession or not.

The last time South Africa found itself in an impaired economic climate was 17 years ago.
