Somalia's transitional government takes its first military stand against Islamist insurgents in the country.

Following a three-week onslaught that has killed hundreds of people and sent more than 30,000 fleeing Mogadishu, government soldiers fought the insurgents for control of a strategic road in the city.

The BBC's Mohammad Olad Hassan reports from Mogadishu.
