It's election day in Malawi, with the people there voting for a president and parliament.

President Bingu wa Mutharkia and his Democratic Progressive Party are facing a challenge from John Tembo of the Malawi Congress party, which has formed an alliance with the United Democratic front of former President Bakili Muluzi.

The polls are due to close at 1600 GMT. To find out how the voting was progressing, we spoke to Chakuchanya Hawara in the capital, Lilongwe.
