In Malawi today 5.9 million voters are expected to go to the polls to elect a president and a new Parliament.

The incumbent head of state Bingu Wa Mutharika is running for a second mandate and his main challenger is John Tembo, who is leading a coalition formed by the United Democratic Front and the Malawian Congress party.

Voting started at 0600GMT and Peter Ndoro spoke to Chakuchanya Harawa part of the BBC team in Lilongwe, Malawi.
