Marc Ravlomanana, who was overthrown as Madagascar's head of state in March by Andry Rajoelina, insists that he is still president.
From his current base in South Africa he is calling on the international community to help him return to the island and pave the way for a referendum or elections and the creation of an inclusive government.
Speaking to the BBC, Mr. Ravalomanana said his return to the island nation is central to the restoration of Madagascar's democracy.
From Johannesburg, he spoke to the BBC's Christina Corbett.
