Thousands of people rallied in the centre of London this afternoon calling on the British authorities to grant citizenship to an estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants from a number of countries in Africa and elsewhere in the world.

The United Kingdom and other western countries have been grappling with huge numbers of people seeking economic, political and domestic sanctuary. The Strangers into Citizens campaign argues that a one-off amnesty would benefit the UK chiefly through income tax revenues. Josephine Hazeley went down to the rally in Trafalgar Square.
