In this day and age it's very hard in some corners of the continent to find tradition sitting happily alongside modernity, but one of the nations where this is far from the case is Ghana and today is a big day for the royal household of the Ashantis.

For in Kumasi, the capital of Ghana's Ashanti region, celebrations are taking place to mark the 10th anniversary of the ascension of the king, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the streets from the Royal Palace to the Babayara sports stadium where there will be a grand Durbar of chiefs from the region and beyond.

David Amanor has been soaking up the atmosphere and reports on the significance of today's events.
