Take a hike for wildlife
walker and dogCould you raise £500 to keep Wiltshire blooming? Wiltshire Wildlife Trust are throwing down the gauntlet to register now for the Sarsen Trail, a 26-mile hike across the Wiltshire countryside from Avebury to Stonehenge which takes place on Sunday, May 2nd.

The Trust is Wiltshire’s biggest environmental charity, working across the county to help protect wild animals and plants from the familiar snowdrop to the rare squinancywort - a delicate pink downland flower once thought to cure the quincy (a very nasty throat complaint).

SEND US YOUR SNAPS!!

If you're planning to take a camera along during the Sarsen Trail, we'd like you to send us some your best pictures for our Sarsen Trail 2004 Gallery.

Whether it's a self portrait, your dog doing their bit or even something of the scenery along the way, we'd like to share the your experiences with everyone else!

We'll offer a prize to the best picture to capture the essence of the day.

To send your pictures, email BBC Wiltshire here and attach your photos in the normal way.

Formats can include JPGs, GIFs and TIFs. We can also work with PSDs and BMPs. Alternatively send copies to: BBC Wiltshire, Broadcasting House, Swindon, SN1 3RW and enclose a stamped addressed envelope if you would like your prints returned.

As well as looking after the wildlife that still exists in Wiltshire, the Trust wants to bring the sights, sounds and smells of a wildlife-rich landscape - the sort of experience our grandparents took for granted - back to our downlands, meadows, rivers, gardens and road verges.

Sheila Martin from the Trust says the charity needs the public's support to help turn into reality its vision of a Wiltshire brimming with wildlife for everyone to enjoy

“We want as many people as possible to register for the Sarsen Trail, collect a sponsor form, and ask all your friends, colleagues and relations to pledge money for Wiltshire’s wildlife,” explains Sheila.

“In recent years the Trail has raised over £30,000. The vast majority of this money has come from sponsorship - the registration fee only just covers the overheads of running the event.”

•Every year, people of all shapes, sizes and ages, from ten to 90, walk the Trail - as well as some of their dogs.

•It’s a great day out - and although the organisers can’t guarantee sunshine, one thing’s for certain - you’ll be walking through some of the loveliest landscape in Wiltshire.

•Scenery includes the panoramic Pewsey Downs and some stretches of Salisbury Plain that are not normally open to the public.

•You can walk the whole Trail or just half.

•If you don’t feel like walking and would still like to be a part of this event and do your bit for Wiltshire’s wildlife, the Trust is urgently seeking volunteers to help on the day. Even an hour or two of your time would be invaluable.

• To take up the Sarsen challenge, contact Sheila Martin or Pat Turner on 01380 725670, ext 225.
