A total of 16 schools will receive the money to tackle the problems caused by cars on the school run.

Take the bus to school and leave the car at home.

The schools will be encouraging pupils to walk, cycle, lift share or catch the bus instead.

Another three schools may be awarded funding depending on the outcome of bids to the national Cycle Project Fund.

Wiltshire County Council is making funding available to schools to spend on capital projects such as secure parking for bikes, and new footpaths and road crossings.

Schools across Wiltshire were asked to develop travel plans last year in order to bid for funds.

All the projects are aimed at encouraging pupils and parents to switch to more environmentally friendly modes of travel to and from school.

By increasing walking, cycling, lift sharing and bus use, the scheme aims to reduce the problems caused by cars on the school run, such as congestion and pollution.

Travelwise manager William Prendergast said: "Since the Taking Action on School Journeys initiative was launched, we have been encouraging schools to develop their own travel plans.

"By doing this, schools can identify which projects will help them to increase the number of pupils travelling to and from school by using 'greener' forms of transport."
