Rebecca, who moved from Spain to take up the post, is encouraging us to compost, rather than bin, much of our kitchen and garden rubbish. | | Rebecca Midgley |
Convinced that Wiltshire's huge rubbish problem can be helped if we all compost at home, Rebecca explains: "So much of what we throw into our bins can be composted. "Cardboard, fruit and vegetable peelings, dead cut flowers - they can all go in to make excellent compost. "It's easy, everyone can do it and it isn't smelly if it's done properly. "With modern compost bins for the kitchen and garden, composting is really quite hygienic, and as landfill sites are rapidly filling up (they will be full in just five years time in the west country), it makes good environmental sense too", she says. | | Compost bin |
Currently, Rebecca is looking for local home composting 'ambassadors' - people who are keen to help spread the word and give practical, 'hands-on' composting help and advice to other people. "Training will be given to new compost ambassadors, so you don't need to be a composting expert, just keen to help others make their own compost at home," Rebecca says. The Trust is also looking for people in and around the Devizes area to help with a ground breaking new research project into home composting. The innovative study, run in conjunction with local authorities, is the first of its kind in the country. It will examine how successful home composting is in diverting rubbish from landfill sites. If you're already a keen compostor see lefthand panel to find out how to take part in the Trust's composting research programme and how to contact Rebecca if you'd like to become a compost ambassador.
