Mildred Bruce: ace aviator and racing driver
Mildred Bruce, plane and racing carRare pictures of Wiltshire's first round-the-world female aviator and motor racing driver are among the many highlights of a new exhibition at the county's record office.

The first photo is a publicity picture of Mildred Bruce, from Bradford-on-Avon, commemorating her 19,000 mile solo flight around the world in 1930.

Mikdred BruceThe second shows her with her biplane and racing car in 1935.

Another photo in the exhibition shows an even more famous aviatrix, Amy Johnson, with Colonel Christopher Fuller, of Corsham, in Russia.

Colonel Fuller made a tour of Russia in 1931 before the repression of the Stalinist regime made travel in the country difficult for Westerners.

Amy Johnson was the first woman to make a solo flight to Australia.

TrainThe photographic exhibition - called 'Under Exposed!' - highlights the huge diversity of images kept in the archives at the county's record office in Trowbridge.

Other photos in the exhibition include one from 1928 of a steam locomotive pulling 26 truck-loads of feathers from Sawtells feather factory in Melksham.

An unusual shot of the spire of Salisbury cathedral has a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, and there are also photos revealing home life in the cathedral city in 1945.

Jimmy Page et alA publicity photo for a 60s pop group called the Carter-Lewis Southerners shows a fresh-faced guitarist named Jimmy Page. Page later went on to find super-stardom as the creative force behind the 1970s rock colossus, Led Zeppelin.

The Carter-Lewis Southerners performed at Melksham Assembly Hall in 1963, and the photo is part of a collection of Melksham Urban District Council publicity posters.

Another image shows photographs from Lord Methuen of Corsham Court's album chronicling his experiences in the Boer War. The photos in the exhibition show field guns in action in the Transvaal in 1901.

Mildred Bruce in boatBradenstoke Abbey Farm is shown before it was bought by the newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hurst (on whom the film classic Citizen Kane was reputedly based) in 1929.

The farm was dismantled and shipped to California brick-by-brick in packing cases - it was never rebuilt and remains in storage.
