The exhibition, which is based at the University of Bath's Oakfield Campus, runs until May 2004 contains a selection of classic consoles from the 1970s and 80s. | | Simon Webb, curator of Swindon's Museum of Computing. |
The games, ranging from 'Pong' to 'Pacman', 'Space Invaders' to 'Sonic the Hedgehog', are on show courtesy of the Museum's Simon Webb and Abi Waddell. Hearing the sound of those early computer games certainly brings back memories of spending hours of fun with just a black and white screen, two buttons, an industrial sized console and a white dot! And Swindon's Museum of Computing is allowing people to relive those halcyon days by encouraging visitors to play some of the early games. | | Close-up of the Odyssey games console - the first of its kind. |
Amongst the artefacts is the first ever console - an Odyssey One from the early 1970s. There are more than 60 different models on show in the Museum - including several versions of 'Pong' from the late 1970s. As the games became more advanced, with games like the sophisticated 'Space Invaders', more became available. Abi Waddell says that they cleared their own attics to put the games and consoles on show. | | A selection of table-top and handheld games. |
