The Swindon Shuffle 2007 - A Retrospective

The four day music festival which took place in and around Swindon in July 2007 was a great success. Read organiser Richard Craven's retrospective and view a gallery of images from each gig.

Now that the dust has settled, the hangovers have receded and we're all back at work or college, it’s time to take stock of what was an incredible weekend for both the Swindon music community and The Prospect Hospice.

When we had the idea of a charity gig nearly 18 months ago I don't think any of us dreamt The Swindon Shuffle would become as big as it did.

Real celebration

From the moment The Unforeseen started their acoustic set at the County Ground Winners Lounge on the Thursday evening up until the last notes of Electric City Heights set at the 12 Bar on Sunday night, this was a real celebration of the musical talent on show in Swindo..

Over 35 acts played across the four days and six venues (and that doesn't include the impromptu acoustic stage we set up in the beer garden of the 12 Bar on the Sunday afternoon) to packed venues across the town.

Incredible performances

There were some incredible performances throughout the weekend, but it would be unfair to single anyone out as solo acts, duos and bands all raised their game.

It was fantastic to see members of the rock fraternity mixing with indie fans, punk rockers checking out the acoustic acts. There was a real sense of community between the music fans of Swindon.

All the acts played the Swindon Shuffle free or charge and a large number of them remained around for the duration of the weekend supporting the other acts. Likewise the venue managers and staff also entered into the spirit and, where possible attended some of the other gigs.

Amount raised for charity

The money raised from sales of tickets, CDs and T-Shirts (as well as some significant donations) are still being processed as we speak but we expect to have raised over £2000 for the Prospect at Home campaign. £250,000 is the target and you've all helped to contribute significantly towards this.

I really felt the town got behind the festival and we're all grateful to BBC Wiltshire, Frequency, The Swindon Advertiser, GWR, Brunel FM and The Ocelot for all supporting the 2007 Swindon Shuffle, as well as Arts Mind and Swindon Borough Council who provided some much needed funding.

Emotional

It’s been exhausting at times, it's been emotional but it was more than worth it, thanks to my fellow organisers - Paul Jellings, Neil Gammon, Phil Dyson, Tim McDonald and everyone who supported the Shuffle.

We want this to be a regular fixture on the Swindon Music Calender and are already making plans for the Swindon Shuffle 2008.
