PSI Ghostwatch Report: Littlecote House Hotel

A 10-strong team of researchers from Paranormal Site Investigators explored a 'haunted hotel' recently, where the ghosts allegedly outnumbered them.

Littlecote House Hoteljust over the wiltshire border near Hungerford is a Grade I listed Tudor mansion situated in an estate of 24 hectares of parkland, and its dozens of stories of ghostly activity, which stretch back decades, attracted the attention of Swindon-based PSI.

Among the traditional sightings described by staff is that of a black dog seen on the Jerusalem staircase: when you go to stroke it, your hand goes straight through.

The same location was the scene of a bizarre incident where a man's collarbone and some ribs were allegedly broken when a ball of white light pushed him against the wall.

Mother Barnes

Another of the most unusual stories is told by a woman who lived in a flat above the Orangery. She awoke in the small hours of a November night to see a figure crossing the lawn toward 'Mother Barnes' (a 16th century midwife associated with the site).

The weird thing was that the witness felt herself to be floating in mid air throughout the experience, and only later realised that her accommodation was built long after the time of Mother Barnes.

Mother Barnes figures in the most famous tale Littlecote House, that of 'Wild' William Darrell who, it is said, murderously cast his newborn child on a blazing fire. The child was illegitimate, and Mother Barnes was supposedly brought in to deliver the unfortunate baby.

Haunted bedroom

Despite some circumstantial evidence, there is no proof that this appalling event actually happened, but the room where the babe was reputedly born and slain - in November 1575 - is known as the 'haunted bedroom', and featured in PSI's vigil.

Of the five locations investigated, the haunted bedroom was the scene of the most reported activity (with the chapel a close second).

During a séance there, one of the team saw a woman rocking a baby and talking to a man, and during the evening several other investigators independently saw dark shapes moving around the room.

At one point, four members of the team inexplicably felt cold, yet the group's technical equipment registered no change in the ambient temperature. Was this an instance where one person's suggestion inspired others to feel cold (primed expectation), or was this a supernatural chill that machinery can't detect?

Long gallery

The Long Gallery was the scene of an immensely frustrating equipment failure that defies explanation. A video camera had been set there to monitor a trigger object (a coin placed on white paper, and drawn around).

This experiment invites spirits to use psychokinesis (PK) to move the object, and the camera was there to record any activity. The investigation team had been alerted to the experiment, and were kept away from it.

When the coin was checked it was indeed found to have moved - but the camera had broken down. Its new battery was completely drained, which is known to happen in particularly cold environments, but the temperature here was perfectly normal.

Was the camera malfunction a symptom of real PK activity, or was it simply a coincidence that allowed human error to go undetected?

The team took hundreds of photographs, nearly a hundred of which showed interesting anomalies, but natural explanations can be advanced for each, so no satisfactory evidence of paranormal phenomena has been claimed (when assessing evidence for paranormal activity, PSI prefers to err on the side of caution).

The same high standard of analysis was given to the ten hours of video recordings, as well as the audio recordings and environmental data collected, such as ultrasound and electromagnetism.

PSI is aware that a single investigation can be a rather hit-or-miss affair, and therefore often conducts 'longitudinal' investigations that take place over a period of months.

There were so many interesting features revealed in the details of this investigation, that PSI is considering a return to Littlecote House Hotel, to discover more secrets of its permanent residents.

I used to work at Littlecote House Hotel and often had the job of closing the bar that is in the main house. I would say without a doubt that place is haunted.

Just like Lisa Pearce I have family links to this amazing place. My father Edward George Popham and my sister Juanice Popham have both been to visit Littlecote house but neither was able to stay due to travel plans. I will get here myself one day and I will be staying in hope of connecting with my ancestors.

Just got back from Littlecote house. We stayed in the Elizabeth Suite a room on its own between the long gallery and the haunted room. I have an interest in ghosts, my wife is a scientist and is very matter of fact. Her views have now changed! On the first night I was pushed in the back and she was held by her arm. On the first night I woke up sweating and feeling very hot, I became aware of tapping noises. I tried to explain this in the morning to my wife but she thought I was pulling her leg. Strangely, this happened to her on the second night, and she then heard the noises. I was unaffected. On our last morning I could hear a women or child wailing. I just felt really sad. I woke Laura so she could hear it but she said she could not and went back to sleep! The feeling of hotness was very strange, it was only when we spoke about it when we were driving home did we realise how unnatural the heat was. We agreed that the room was cold, but the heat we experienced was unnatural. If the bed was hot we would both feel this? Why only one, one night and the other the other? We did not even swap sides. She cannot give any scientific reason for this or the other things we felt. I was really chuffed and like me wants to experience more. Totally recommend Littlecote, if you go you must stay n the old house!

barry was great and his dry humour made me and the family group most entertained but the versatility of the guy was phenomenal he must be very tired but good show Barry

I have just returned from a four night stay in one of the Historic rooms at Littlecote. I was interested to hear of any ghostly sightings so started to read your comments. We wandered around the old house unguided and have to say didn't encounter anything unusual other than it being quite dark and slightly unsettling. However I also was unable to make or receive calls on my mobile and my battery went flat and wouldn't recharge - I took it to Nokia to ask if there was something wrong and they thought it looked as though it had been dropped or had water damage and that I could have it repaired but it would cost almost as much as a new phone. I, therefore, bought a new one but perhaps was too hasty if others are saying that their phones worked when they left the hotel.

My mum and dad visited LittleCote House a while ago and they said they saw ghosts apparently. My mum is sleeping there soon but she told me that one day when the man was riding on his horse, a babys head with a ball of fire pooped out and the horse jumped up, letting the man fall off him back and he broke his neck. Good.

I have just returned from a 4 night stay at Littlecote, but stayed in the new build part of the hotel in room 428. I also experienced my mobile battery being completely flat each morning, even though it had been fully charged the night before.I wonder if the new part of the hotel is built on the site of something historic? Does anyone know thwe location of the stile where Will Darrell was killed???

Sarah Abbs
Went on ghost tour at Little Cote. I got "visited" by William Darrell. He kept pushing me against the wall and nearly got pulled into the bedroom where the baby was burnt. Didn't feel scared though. Very exciting.

Julie
My husband and I have just returned from a short Christmas break at Littlecote House. We decided on the spur of the moment to go on the ghost tour. We both thought that this would be a light hearted evening where we would be told about the ghosts which haunt the house. We were taken around by Barry, who told us all about the house, and asked us concentrate at various points in the house to see if anyone could detect anything ghostly. Several people either saw or felt some kind of presence. Much to my surprise not to say shock, while in the Brick Parlour I felt something very cold on my face followed by a feeling of intence coldness allover. Barry asked a fellow guest on the tour to take a photograph on her digital camera. The result was most strange - a figure can be plainly seen behind me. Without the picture I would most certainly have dismissed the episode as a figment of my imagination - now unless another explanation can be given, I am sure that there was a spirit around.I would like to add that I had not been drinking prior to this experience, but needed a stiff drink afterwards !!!

Zoe
In response to Caroline Grear's comment, ghosts only come out at night, because we are all dreaming! OF COURSE.

John Bennett
Stewart, I was fascinated by your reminiscences. However, could you explain what are meant by the repeated references to "anomolies". I consulted a number of dictionaries but remained unenlightened.

Paul
this is in WILTSHIRE NOT BERKSHIRE

Stewart Bennett
I worked at littlecote between 1998 and 2006. I used to live in the pavilion in the field. 1 night myself and a friend decided to take pictures around the house with several anomolies appearing.1st of all in the main lounge i had a pc screen, in 1 pic it was clear and the following pic a large "orb" appeared. Also in the same room there were other such "orbs".Then we moved to the back bedroom ad took some more pix. Unfortunately the room was clear of anomolies apart from where the bed was! We counted the "orbs" in that area and it went into double figures.

jennifer
i have just spent 3 nights at littlecotte it was great we went on a ghost hunt with a chap called barry, he was fantastic a big thank you to him, for his time. we all experienced some form of paranormal, some of us felt cold and others saw children and a black dog at the top of a staircase.

Angela Harrop
I stayed at the hotel last weekend 06/06/08. The weather was boiling, yet my room was freezing, I had to open the windows to let heat in. I was very scared for three nights!!!

Annette
I had a very interesting night ghosthunting at littlecote. The hunt was well organised and to my delight i picked up on names of spirits present in some of the rooms. I also was asked to do psychometry (touch)on a very old wooden box in the chapel, which is said to be cursed. To my absolute astonishment i picked up what was in the box and told all the people on the hunt what i felt was in the box (which i will not reveal) and who the box was connected to. I also sensed the freezing cold, goosepimples and heat, all the changes that occur when spirit or ghosts are present.I did take some photographs during the day and in the evening and discovered orbs and some unexplainable shadowing and light on them, in the daytime snaps and night snaps. One of my best ever shortbreaks, it left me excited and also looking forward to more ghosthunts in the future.

Lisa Pearce
Littlecote was owned by my ancestors for 200 years (The Pophams) and I have heard the stories! It is a very interesting house.

amanda bennette
i workd in little cote hse hotel n the house were he livd is scarey we found spiral staircase were he was 2 have lockd the wman in there is this true the staircase has a chillin feelin

Ken Durant
Very interested in your comments, regarding the draining of your batteries. I recently spent 3 nights at the hotel, staying in the Jane Seymoor sweet. Every morning I found that my mobile battery was flat, having recharged each day. This has never happened before and my mobile continues to work perfectlty since I retuned home, so why did this happen and was it a coincidence that you experienced a similar problem with your equipment.I would appreciate any comments.

Asamoah Twumasi
I think these phenomenom can't be prove by scientific means but one will believe in these after experiencing it.

Alan Jones
I would like to ask the research group if they believe that one day definitive proof of the existence of psychic phenomena will ever be found. Alternatively, is it just a personal journey into this realm that can provide answers that only the researcher himself can ever find truly convincing. Would love to hear your comments.

joanna murphy
When a teenager in the mid-70's, I took a holiday job as a nanny which meant spending the night at Littlecote, the family's home, before a long journey to Scotland, The house was then un-sullied by the undignified hotel transition it has undergone. The then owners regaled me with many extraordinary stories, including the famous Mother Barnes one, and my night in the house, (with only the housekeeper the remaining occupant) was one of the most ghostly I have ever experienced, in addition to which, I needed a small map in order to find my way down to the kitchen the next morning. I wrote a play: "The Long Gallery" based on the house, and tell my junior pupils the Littlecote stories in candlelight, at the end of the Christmas term.

Caroline Grear
Why do ghosts only come out at night?

Ghost Buster
Anne, had you been drinking all evening?

Anne Martin
Hello, a very interesting artical!I had a strange experience while staying at Littlecote this time last year. My partner David and I were staying in the William Of Orange Bedroom. The 1st night we were there I woke up at around 2am. I looked over to the wall just to the right of the fireplace and suddenly two white horses (almost blue-white because of the moon light I would say) pulling a cart with nobody riding it, came straight from the wall and ran me over in my bed. It went woosh.. is the only way to describe it. I felt crushed for a second and no sooner had that happened and they were gone and the room was silent. Very odd and it frightened me to bits at the time. Also in the 4 nights David and myself were there, the bed vibrated twice.Best regards and I am being very honest here. In fact for sheer punishment we are going back there at the end of July to the same room. Suckers for punishment eh?Anne.

Madeleine Lestrange
I would like to join the PSI society. How do I do this?

Kayleigh Farrar
Spooky, but I dont belive in ghosts.
