After receiving lots of entries from all over the county and for many different sports - including cricket, football, horse riding, volleyball, table tennis and boxing - judges have chosen the 2006 Sports Unsung Hero for Wiltshire.

Following deliberations, the judges opted for Peter Quinney from Melksham.

Peter is 72 and is a senior coach with the Pewsey Vale Flyers Trampoline Club - who put his name forward. Peter has been involved in the sport for more than 50 years and, in 1960, was crowned as British Champion and has given up much of his life to helping others.

In that time he played a major part in the setting up of the Wiltshire School of Gymnastics in Melksham, he's voluntarily helped out with special needs students in Pewsey and Rowde, and he won't take any money - even expenses.

He'll drive people to Hull to compete and won't take a penny!

Lynne Bull from the Flyers nominated Peter:

"Everything he does is in a quiet, unassuming way. He never looks for praise.

"He does a huge amount and he gives everyone that same commitment. I've got enormous respect for him - an amazing coach!"

On learning of his award, Peter was almost lost for words and had tears in his eyes.

"Great! I'm very humbled. Obviously very pleased.

"Its a tremendous experience to see the kids enjoying themselves. They've got something purposeful to do.

"Its personal pleasure, and when I see some of the special needs pupils I get very emotional about it."

Peter now goes through to the regional final in Bristol on Sunday 3rd December and could win a place at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony.

Ian Longdon went to meet Peter during the Flyer's training session at the Tidworth Leisure Centre on the basis that he was on a short-list of five. Little did Peter know that there wasn't a short-list, and that he was actually the winner!! First, Ian spoke to Lynne Bull from the club…

This award has been won by one of the best sports coaches i have ever met. I may be biased as he is my Coach but he very much deserves this award. He has helped me improve my skills as a Competitor, Knowledge of the sport and also some extremeley useful Coaching Skills. I can say on behalf of the club Thank you for Everything Pete and you very much deserve this award. (Team Captain)

Jacqui Upton - Head of Pre-School WSG
In the early years of the Wilshire School of Gymnastics we had very little money and even less usable equipment for our Pre-school classes. Pete very kindly donated a number wooden ladders, slides and A-Frames to the club. We subsequently discovered that Pete had handmade them himself. Years later they are still in daily use and have given great pleasure to countless children. Thanks Pete for all of your support over the years.

Rosie Bascombe
Well done Pete. Best wishes from the outer edges of the South West region.I've known you for many years and long may you continue to help people in the many ways that you do. Rosie Bascombe - Head Coach Ringwood & Bournemouth Trampoline & DMT Club

Jason Richardson

Peter Quinney is a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He is unassuming, and cares passionatly about his sport and the way it helps to develop children of all abilities and from every background. He has the rare ability of being able to communicate with children and uses his vast knowledge of his chosen sport to ensure that all gymnasts and trampolinists he teaches reach their full potential. We feel that no one is more worthy of such an award. Incidentally, he does bake and ice fantastic cakes.

Peter is a wonderful, caring coach with a mega-sized heart and love for trampolining. As his Special Needs Trampoline Coach Examiner he made a great impression on me. His love of the sport and dedication to helping students with Special Needs was so heart-warming. I wish him all the best for a well-deserved award.Pewsey is so lucky to have him.

Juanita Davenport
Peter Quinney's passion and interest in the development and progress of trampoline as a sport has been exceptional. Peter has been inspirational to many young people over the years; not only recreational or in the field of competition but in the deliverance and enjoyment to young persons who are less able. I am delighted that Peter has received this award. Congratulations, Juanita Davenport

Jonathan Barley
Well done Pete, thoroughly deserved! Pete is completely dedicated to giving people the opportunity to excel at trampolining and gymnastics. He demands maximum commitment from everybody, especially himself, and for those who are willing to grasp the opportunity, he will help them to achieve far more than they would ever have dreamt. This includes all ages and all abilities, not just the stars. Jonathan Barley (ex Chairperson of Pewsey Vale Flyers)

I am a Senior Club Coach for Trampolining at a club in Bristol, and have known Peter for the last 5 years or so. I am so pleased to hear about Peter's new accolade as Wiltshires Unsung Hero award!! If there was anyone that I know in the sport that does their duty willingly, voluntarily, concientiously and with passion and contagious enthusiasm, then Peter is at the very top of that list!!! His modesty and genuine nature is the mark of a true gentleman, who I feel that we are slowly losing from modern society. He has always provided me with words of praise and encouragement during my few years as an up and coming coach and performer, which have always been greatly appreciated, not only from me but also from his and my peers within the sport!! I wish Peter my most sincerest congratulations on this marvellous achievement as I truely believe him to be a beacon of all that is good, not only in trampolining, but in sport as a whole!!! I have known Peter since he was a boy as our respective parents were friends for over 50 years. Even as a boy Peter was always so caring and kind, he always put others first and this has continued throughout his adult life. I feel so pleased that his achievements in helping others has been recognized and proud to have him as my friend.

Eirwen Quinney (Win)
As Peter's wife, I know I am biased, but I have first hand experience of the time Peter spends studying and planning to help each individual to reach their maximum potential. He richly deserves this award. My thanks go to Lynne Bull who has given him so much support over the last ten years.

Anita Marshall
