Unusually the hardly exotic locale of the unassuming town of Swindon has a very strong link with the world of James Bond. Author Ian Fleming lived for many years in the nearby village of Sevenhampton and in 1984 Roger Moore paid a visit to the distinctive Renault building in West Swindon to film scenes for his final outing in the role - View to a Kill. The Swindon connection with the much-loved series of films was cemented in early 1999 when James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan alongside Judi Dench and Sophie Marceau came to the town. They were there to film at the futuristic Motorola complex near Blunsdon for that year's 007 blockbuster - the 19th in the series - The World is Not Enough. Security was tight, local press arrived en masse and naturally BBC Wiltshire Sound (as BBC Radio Swindon was then known as) was there. Reporter Neil Cowling used espionage skills worthy of the famous secret agent himself when between takes he managed to collar Pierce Brosnan himself for an exclusive interview. He began by asking him just how much he enjoyed playing the world's most famous spy. |
