An unofficial anthem

There are numerous examples of the Wiltshire dialect recorded in several poems and songs... here's one that's been adopted as an unofficial county anthem.

One old Wiltshire tune was adopted as a marching song by the 4th Battalion, T.A., of the Wiltshire (Duke of Edinburgh's Royal) Regiment and has almost become Wiltshire’s unofficial anthem.

Salisbury MP, Robert Key, continues the tradition of singing ‘The Vly be on the Turmut’ at every general election. It has become a tradition for the song to be sung by the successful candidate from the balcony of the city's White Hart Hotel!

REGIMENTAL MARCH 'THE WILTSHIRE'

'Twere on a jolly zummer's day, the twenty-fust o' May,
John Scroggins took his turmut-hoe, wi' thic he trudged away:
"Now zome volks they likes haymakin', and zome they vancies mowin'-
But of all the jobs as I likes best, gi'e I the turmut-hoein'."

Chorus

The vly, the vly,
The vly be on the turmut -
'Tis all me eye
Fer I to try
To keep vly off the turmut.

"The fust place as I went to work, it were wi' Varmer Gower:
Who vowed and swore as how I were a fust-rate turmut-hoer;
The second place I went to work, they paid I by the job -

But if I'd knowed a little 'afore, I'd sooner a' bin in quod."

Chorus

The vly, the vly,
The vly be on the turmut -
'Tis all me eye
Fer I to try
To keep vly off the turmut.

"The last place as I went to work, they sent fer I a-mowin',
I sent word back, I'd sooner take the zack, than gi'e up turmut-hoein'!
Now all you jolly varmer chaps wot bides at home so warm -
I'll now conclude my ditty wi' a-wishin' you no harm."

Chorus

The vly, the vly,
The vly be on the turmut -
'Tis all me eye
Fer I to try
To keep vly off the turmut.

Those who served in the successor to The wiltshire Regiment, The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment, will have been familiar with The Vly, as it was regularly performed on Regimental parades and mess nights by the regimental band. You can get it from the farmersboy website - www.farmersboys.com

As a Moonraker, I sang this song when I reached the top of Mt. Fuji last week. I think the Japanese enjoyed it immensely !

Pauline Lindsell
Could you please tell me where I can get hold of the music to accompany the vly regimental tuen.

Lynnette
Can you tell me how to get hold of the music for the song? (voice) My father in law would love my son to sing it for him.

nice to hear (well, read) the old wiltshire national anthem - it's been a while since my granddad used to give us the odd rendition!!

Readers might like to know that the "Gallery Choir" based in Woodborough near Pewsey specialise in arrangements of Wiltshire songs including the "Vly" Some of theses songs can be found in Devizes Museum. Of particular note is a series of wiltshire carols that we performed at christmas for the first time in 120 years.
