Go, go, go!

Louise's GWR run-up diary - 1

by Louise Wanless
A diary of a reluctant runner - Louise Wanless has second thoughts following her decision to take part in the Great Women's Run on June 25th.

Friday 7th April

This is Louise

Name: Louise Wanless

Age: 36 (but look much younger honest!!)

Occupation: Media and PR Manager, Sunderland AFC

Lives: West Boldon

After the initial warm, cuddly feeling you always get when agreeing to do something for a worthy cause the cold hard reality of what I had agreed to kicked in!

In recent years my nose has ran more than I have and to say my fitness levels have slipped is rather like saying Roman Abraminovich is worth a bob or two!

So with the very best intentions I decided to start my training this week as I recognise there is work to be done!

"My other half says just getting off the sofa would be an improvement on my current state so as you can see there is some serious training required."

Unfortunately the best laid plans of mice and men and all that – I have still yet to actually set foot (or indeed feet) outside the front door, which bearing in mind I have around 10 weeks to get up to Olympic speed and can barely manage to run a bath is rather a worry!

Perhaps I’m being a little optimistic in my aim to challenge Dame Kelly but I used to be a half decent runner in my younger days, however age, work and a serious addiction to chocolate have sadly taken their toll on this once lean mean running machine!

My other half says just getting off the sofa would be an improvement on my current state so as you can see there is some serious training required.

My intention is, after a stressful day at work (we have a game tomorrow so it’s rather hectic!) to venture out into sunny Boldon this evening and see just how much work there is to be done.

The Club’s medical team – a fantastically well qualified bunch of physios, sports scientists and doctors are all providing me with advice and encouragement so I have no excuses (but I’m sure I’ll find some!).

I’ll let you know next week how I get on – wish me luck!!!
