A year ago, fit notes replaced sick notes that are signed off by GPs. Instead a fit note sets out what employees are capable of doing as they recover from illness or injury. The aim is to cut down on the cost of absence to business - in some cases it amounts to up to 16 per cent of an employer's annual salary bill. It was billed as the "end of the sickie" but has the introduction of fit notes worked?
