Companies based in South Wales ports claim they are at a disadvantage compared to their English counterparts because of backdated business rates bills. The charges were waived in England by the Westminster Government after a successful lobbying campaign. But the Welsh Assembly Government say it would have lost £10 million from the treasury had it done the same as England, leading to deeper cuts in the public sector.
