Voluntary sector under threat?

With public sector cuts on the horizon and the economic recovery remaining fragile for private business as well, what are the challenges faced by our voluntary sector?

More than 40,000 people are employed by charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises in Wales, which provide a wide range of services from day care centres to community transport, advocacy and citizen's advice.

So should the sector be protected from cuts to funding, or can it make better use of the resources it already has? And should the so-called Third Sector rely on public handouts anyway, or are there more sustainable alternatives?
