Business Rates Revaluation

Every five years the value of business properties is reassessed - and the rates they pay changed accordingly.

The new rating system comes into force in April next year and while around 60 percent of companies will benefit paying lower rates the rest face higher charges -and some have received huge increases.

But many say the new rates are unfair - the Valuation Office Agency conducted the valuations in April 2008 - before the real property slump began.

The Wales Assembly Government has tried to help by reducing the multiplier at which the rates are calculated. But some business leaders say it's not enough.

The Scottish and Northern Irish governments have stepped in to help their businesses and England has imposed temporary limit on how much more companies should have to pay.

But in Wales businesses who will soon be expected to pay tens of thousands of pounds more in rates say they face going to the wall.

Wales@Work looks at the winners and losers in the recent business rate revaluations.
