The Latest update from Wales@work

The Public Sector

The recession has hit the private sector hard in Wales with hundreds of job losses announced in the past year.

But with the public sector being Wales' biggest employer - how is it faring in the recession?

Last week's budget left the Welsh Assembly Government with a £400 million shortfall in its finances for the coming year, so belts are being tightened across the board.

And with the financial settlements to local authorities already being squeezed, how long can our councils remain a safe employer?

Nurses, teachers and police saw their pay increased recently thanks to three-year pay deals which were already negotiated - but is that fair when most of the private sector is taking a pay drop or freeze?

Wales@Work discusses the growing divide between the public and private sector workers in Wales and whether Welsh workers need to get away from their dependence on the public sector.
