The Latest update from Wales@work

Recession - it's official

Figures revealed the British Gross Domestic Product has had two consecutive quarters of negative growth - and confirmed what we've all known for months.

There was more bad news too, the pound continues to plunge and the latest unemployment figures were the worst that Wales has seen in nearly a decade.

Add to that the announcement that steel maker Corus is cutting up to a 1000 jobs in Wales when job losses here are already among the highest in the UK.

But we are not alone - the US, Ireland and Germany are just a few of the industrialised countries that have already succumbed to the R word.

So what can Wales do to ride the storm? Has Wales been hit harder than the other areas of the UK?

Is there anything that we can gain from a recession? What can the Welsh Assembly Government do to help business in these difficult times? And have we even hit rock bottom yet or is there worse to come.

Wales@Work looks at the options.
