The Latest update from Wales@work

The Welsh Wine Industry

A staggering 1.7 billion bottles of wine are drunk in the UK every year. Wales produces a hundred thousand of them, not a bad harvest from our 21 vineyards. But could we be making more?

Over the border the industry is really booming - there are around 360 vineyards and English sparkling wine is beating the best Champagne in tasting competitions.

One grower thinks Wales could be become the next New Zealand - and there's certainly a market for it - UK drinkers spent £7.4 billion on wine at supermarkets and off licences last year.

But can you really imagine Wales as a top wine producing country.

Wales@work looks at whether it's time to get serious about the wine industry.
