Health and safety at work

Two-and-a-half million working days were lost in Wales in the past year because of workplace injury and work-related ill-health.

In 2006-07 about 132,000 people in Wales suffered an illness they believed was caused by or made worse by their current or past work, the Health and Safety Commission says.

In the same period 14 workers in Wales were killed - and there were 1,673 reported major injuries to employees. There were eight fatal and 751 non-fatal injuries to members of the public.

When the figures were released, chairwoman of the Health and Safety Commission Judith Hackitt said, "Never mind banning conkers or Christmas decorations, look at these figures - this is what real health and safety is all about".

So is enough being done to protect us in the workplace? If you're the boss, do you know what you're meant to do by law?

Or do you feel that health and safety legislation is nothing more than a mountain of red tape which just gets in the way of running your business?
