Economic Inactivity in Wales

One in four Welsh people of working age is economically inactive. One in 10 people in Wales isn't working and doesn't want to work - that's more than 300,000 people. Who are these people and what's stopping them getting jobs?

In July, the Government launched a Green Paper consultation called In Work, Better Off: next steps to full employment.

It says the paper "sets out robust measures aimed at helping disadvantaged people back into sustainable work." The consultation period is due to end this month.

According to Peter Hain, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Welsh Secretary, the goal is "full employment in our generation across Wales".

So why are so many people out of work? Do people really not want to work? And is the government tackling the problem in the right way?
