Britain's new leader

As Gordon Brown officially takes the reins as Prime Minister it's a new era in British politics, but is it also a new dawn for UK plc?

What difference does the person at the top make to everyone else? Does it matter what sort of leader he or she is?

And just what is a good leader? Someone inspirational? Someone confident enough to make bold decisions? Is it someone who cracks the whip, or someone who works as part of a team? Can the same person do both?

Some might argue that a future leader was born that way and showed early signs of their talent. Gordon Brown was famously fast-tracked to university at just 16, and later was the second student to be elected Rector of Edinburgh University - a post which had often gone to a celebrity who rarely visited.

Others, though, would say that a leader can be made; that with the right training and nurturing most of us could inspire others to follow our lead.

On the eve of a change at the top, Wales@Work looks at the question of leadership and its role in the modern workplace.
