In this week's Science Cafe Adam Walton visits Cardiff University and meets students taking part in "Formula Student" which sets a challenge for mechanical engineering students to develop and build a racing car.

Cardiff's Formula Student team

Adam gets a guided tour of the School of Engineering in Cardiff from Professor Karen Holford who recently became director. Karen explains her enthusiasm for engineering and introduces us to members of the Formula Student team. The team outline the details of the engine and how it is tested. There's also a visit to the state of the art CUSP lab (Cardiff University Structural Performance lab) where we hear from Dr Rhys Pullin about the range of tests that can be carried out there, from the effect of loading on bridges to stress testing of landing gear.
