Teen Scientists
Bangor University opened its doors to more than 100 youngsters recently, for and Ecoscience Day organised by the College of Natural Sciences. The aim was to inspire more teenagers into careers in science - after all, the skills shortage in 'green jobs' is widely acknowledged. Science Cafe reporter, Nan Pickering, joined in some of the hand-on activities and experiments - and presenter Adam Walton talked to the college's Dr Rosanna Robinson about the importance of maintaining biodiversity.
Designer Science
Art and science aren't natural bedfellows, but take a look at what happens when they do get together! A team of designers have been collaberating with the country's top research scientists to put together an exhibition at the Royal College of Art in London. The result has been 16 original design installations which explore how we might interact with new technologies drawn from the latest research. You can catch part of the IMPACT exhibition online and learn more about the Aberystwyth University team whose work on lie-detectors and thermal imaging was featured. Adam got the full background from organiser Helen Bailey of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Ideas needed...
Get your thinking caps on. The charity Earthwatch has launched its first ever Citizen Science Competition, asking would-be scientists to come up with a research project with far-reacing implications. Jane Nijssen tells Adam how anyone with a vision and an enthusiasm for science can take part - more information can be found on the Earthwatch website.
