This week, we discuss some new research which shows when our European ancestors began drinking milk, and the effect it had on the structure of European civilisation. We mark the 15th anniversary of internet cafes in the UK. There's some tips for using digital cameras. Also, how some big ideas are being considered to combat global warming.
Milking the advantage
New research claims that our mid European ancestors around 7,500 years ago, began drinking the milk of their cattle, and overcame their intolerance to lactose. As a result it enabled them to thrive and spread across Europe, accelerating the development of modern civilisation as we know it. Mark Thomas, Professor of Evolutionary Genetics at Universtiy College London explains the research to presenter Adam Walton
Cybercafes at 15
In September 1994, the UKs first internet cafe opened. Cyberia in London was the first of many cybercafes which appeared in our towns and villages. We hear from staff at Megabytes Cafe in Aberfan, who explain how the cafe still has an important role to play in the community, even though many people have internet access at home.
Digital photography class
We hear from professional photographer Mei Lewis from Cardiff who discusses how digital photography has changed the way we take pictures and has a few pointers to taking better pictures.
Big ideas to save the planet
Several large scale "geo-engineering" projects have been put forward recently by a think tank of scientists who outlined possible methods of reversing climate change and reducing greenhouse gases, should the current methods prove ineffective. We hear from John Shepherd, Professor of Earth Systems Science at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, who chaired a panel of experts for the Royal Society.
