Series 3: Prog 03: 12/10/08

This week's programme comes from the BBC Wales 'Here For You' Event at Techniquest@NEWI in Wrexham

Sunday 12th October at 5.03pm

Repeated Wednesday 15th October at 9:30pm

For the BBC Wales 'Here For You' event at Glyndwr University in Wrexham, Adam Walton has set up The Caff at the Techniquest @ NEWI science discovery centre on the Glyndwr campus. He's joined by our regular 'Espresso Scientist' Dr. Diane Gray who demonstrates an updated version of the theremin, the electronic instrument which provided the soundtrack to so many science fiction movies in the 'fifties and 'sixties. By waving her hand in an infra-red beam - similar to the one on your TV remote control - she produces some weird and wonderful noises (not unlike those Adam plays on his Sunday night music programme!)

Adam's also joined by Dr. Peter Heard, Head of Science at Glyndwr University, to discuss the challenges of getting people interested in science and getting more students into science education. Ray Davies of the Denbighshire-based company Technium Optic comes along to talk lasers and robots. Not as science fiction as it sounds: Ray demonstrates a robot arm which replicates the movements of his hand using a 'glove' which transmits information by laser.

Talking of science fiction, there's a strong Dr. Who theme at 'Here For You'. Adam meets Charlie Blewitt from Millenium FX, the company which creates the special make-up, masks and animatronics for The Doctor's alien adversaries. And reporter Nan Pickering talks to Dr. Paul Parsons, author of the book The Science of Doctor Who.
