Young Welsh Muslims - Did 9 11 Change Their Lives?

In the ten years since 9 11, the world has changed, and everyone has been affected. Eye On Wales uncovers the stories of a generation of Welsh Muslims, whose lives were moulded by that day.

Last updated: 11 September 2011

Selma Chalabi listens to the stories of four Welsh Muslims who were in their teens or their twenties when 9 11 happened.

Alaa Khundaji was 14 years old and at Llanederyn High School. Her life changed dramatically that day, not least because some of her friends no longer spoke to her.

Mona Bayoumi was 19 years old and studying law at Cardiff University. Five days after 9 11 took place, she went to collect the post as she was expecting some birthday cards. However, there was a hand written note containg a threat.

Shah Islam was 24 years old. He now drives a taxi in Cardiff. Before 9 11, he feels he never experienced a racist incident. Now, he feels he receives some sort of negative comment almost every day.

Saifur Rahman was 21 years old and studying at college near Port Talbot. Two years after 9 11, he set up a football team the Neath Port Talbot Tigers. He's convinced that the team has helped to counteract negative stereotypes, and foster integration in his community.
