The Assembly Government is proposing to introduce new laws to crack down on puppy farms in Wales. If the plans go ahead, it would mean that all dogs in licensed breeding kennels would have to be microchipped in future, and that even small-scale breeders would need to obtain a licence. The Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones has said that the new rules would offer better protection for dogs, and buyers. But - with an Animal Welfare Act already in place in England and Wales since 2006 - why is better protection needed?
Dairy farmers are being warned to check that they are insured for loss of milk supplies due to adverse weather this winter. Unions say that many of their members suffered losses last year and that the situation could be worse this winter if local authorities decide to cut back on gritting country roads to save money. Ceredigion Council has already announced a list of roads it won't be gritting.
