The price of bread, Chinese lanterns and natural dams.

Last updated: 22 August 2010

Country Focus - Sunday 22nd August at 07.30am presented by Rachael James. Repeated at 0530 Monday 23rd August.

We visit the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Show and take a look food prices and the cost of living....not to mention the price of a loaf.

Chinese Lanterns may look spectacular in our skies but they are killing livestock, destroying crops and must be banned before more damage is done. The warning comes from the Women's Food and Farming Union who are gathering evidence from the industry of the proliferation of the lanterns and the damage they're causing. Farmers with proof damage might like to contact Helen Bower on president@wfu.org.uk or call 0844 335 0342.

Also causing damage to the countryside are the numbers of deer. We're in Abergele where one local landowner has been frustrated by them in his efforts to establish woodland.

One of the remotest parts of Wales has to be the wild summits and deep valleys of Plynlimon - an area of wetland and peat bogs that provide the perfect habitat for a host of wildlife and plants. Keeping the water levels right is not an easy job but to maintain them over 30 new dams made of straw and heather bales in the drains have been installed at Hafren Forest.
