Looking for silver and the red kites
It's one of the biggest tourist spots in mid wales and yet its an area that few of us know anything about. Bwlch Nant yr Arian is right in the middle of the old lead and silver mining area of the Cambrian Mountains.
Commercial mining stopped many years ago but now visitors flock to Bwlch Nant yr Arian for many other reasons - it's lakes, it's views and most of all the fabulous sight of the Red Kites being fed every day. The Forestry Commission has had a centre here for many years with an aim to encourage low impact tourism. Mel Doel visits the Forest, goes underground at the Llywernog Silver mine next door and witnesses the feeding of the Red Kites and hears from the Welsh Red kite Trust about this conservation success story.
