Update for Country Focus 24th May 2009

On the search for Otters.

Otters were once thought to be almost extinct in Wales but evidence would now suggests hat they're making a comeback from the brink and this beautiful but elusive creature is becoming a wildlife success story.

Country Focus - Sunday 24th May at 07.30am and repeated Tuesday evening at 9.30pm...presented by Mel Doel.

Otters are widely described as a keystone species for conservation - their presence indicates good quality environments. However, research from Swansea University suggests that though Wales is a UK stronghold for otters thier prognosis is far from certain. Mel Doel is out on the search for this elusive creature exploring habitats such as the rivers on the Gower penisula; Bosherton lakes and our coastal waters.

Unfortunately otters are often killed on roads but their bodies are put to good use because there's a team at Cardiff University that manages a Wales- and England-wide otter post-mortem scheme the Otter project.
