Update for Country Focus 10th May 2009

Gorge walking and the environment.

If climbing up rivers, scrabbling over rocks and jumping off ledges into deep pools is your idea of fun then gorge walking could be the high adrenaline activity for you - but at what price to the environment?

Country Focus - Sunday 10th May at 07.30am presented by Mel Doel.

The hobby of gorge walking has become increasingly popular over the years and the mountainous terrain here in Wales has lots to offer the adrenaline seekers among us. Gorge walking (or scrambling) involves following the course of a river and can include sliding and swimming down rapids, floating down fast-flowing chutes, climbing beside waterfalls and jumping off ledges into deep pools.

However the concern is that gorge walking is on the increase and that in turn is of concern to the environment. The National Park Authorities, Forestry Commission, and the Countryside Council for Wales have got together with gorge walkers to form a working group to look at the issues. They came up with the idea of producing a code of conduct - to protect environmentally sensitive areas without restricting those who want to go gorge walking. Mel Doel visits Dinas Rock - a popular location to explore the valleys of the Afon Mellte, near Pontneddfechan village.
