Update for Country Focus 29th March 2009

Badger Cull and climate change.

The Welsh Assembly Government names the location for a proposed cull of badgers in its attempts to combat the spread of Bovine TB. Meanwhile the RSPB are calling for more windfarms for the sake of climate change and what you can do in your house to help.

Country Focus - Sunday 29th March at 07.30am presented by Mel Doel.

The Welsh Assembly Government has now announced the location of the pilot cull of badgers, as part of the fight against Bovine TB. An area in North Pembrokeshire, covering around two hundred square kilometres, has been identified - its a known "hotspot" for the disease.

More onshore wind farms could be built - without damaging wildlife - according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. In a report out this week the conservation charity said climate change threatened many species with extinction, and there was an urgent need for renewable energy to tackle greenhouse gas emissions.

We're in a street in Cardiff which has shown that with a bit of effort it is possible to cut down on the amount of energy we use. People from the appropriately named Greenway Street took part in a year long challenge run by British Gas to become more environmentally friendly around the home. And they've cut usage by 25 per cent with one family saving almost half of it's energy.

And the Polecat which retreated to Mid Wales after it was nearly hunted to extinction ... is on the march again. All the evidence suggests that this predator with its distinctive bandit mask markings has just about re-colonised Wales again and is also being found across Offa's Dyke
