Country Focus update for 26th October 2008.

Recycling plastic and cow dung

This week a mixed bag of rural stories - we meet the welsh kite surfer making waves, visit the village recycling cow dung and how about a good night's sleep on an organic mattress?

Country Focus - Sunday 26th October at 07.30am presented by Mel Doel.

Plastic bags are handed out in their billions every year worldwide. Although more people are beginning to use reusuable ones in 2003 the Marine Conservation Society found an average of 43.2 plastic bags per km surveyed in their annual beach clean. So there is much work to be done - we speak to the organisers of a new group called 'Haverfordwest going plastic bag free' - and if you want to get involved they're having an official launch event at the Merlin Theatre, Pembrokeshire College on Wed 12th, November 7pm.

Making waves - we meet the Welsh kitesurfer, Kirsty Jones who is aiming for victory in the Wave Masters World championships. The final takes place at the world class wave spot of Moulay, near Essaouira in Morocco from 1st-9th November 2008.

Threat to Welsh ancient woods the size of Pontypridd - Research from the Coed Cadw (the Woodland Trust) shows in Wales in the last decade 45 ancient woods with a total area of 1,358 hectares, more than the total area of the town of Pontypridd, have come under threat from destruction or degradation, combining to make 26,000 hectares across the UK.

The village powered by slurry from the local dairy herd - A herd of cows can produce a lot of methane harmful to the environment but one Pembrokeshire farmer is planning to use that gas to produce green energy.
