PLASTIC BAGS - can we live without them?

Country Focus - Sunday 16th March at 7.30am, presented by Iolo ap Dafydd.

Plastic bags - should they be banned? Can we live without them ? The Chancellor, Alistair Darling in his Budget said the government will legislate next year and tax supermarkets and shops if they don't start charging us, the customers, to use their plastic bags. Country Focus talks to the shoppers, the shop keepers and the man campaigning for Wales to be ahead of the game and go plastic bag free as some towns already have.

Spring is nearly upon us and this is the time of year to think about cutting back the hedges. Sadly, like many of our country skills, laying hedges in the traditional fashion is a dying art. Yet the old fashioned way not only looks better, it's more beneficial for future growth. Courses are being run in many places but we visit hedge layers in the Wye Valley.

It's toad breeding season, and roads around the Llandrindod Wells' lake are to be closed every night for the rest of the month to allow thousands of these little creatures to cross safely. Every spring, thousands of toads cross the road, helped by the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, on their way from nearby woods to the lake to spawn - with many falling victim to passing vehicles.
