Along the Heart of Wales
Along the Heart of Wales line
In Sunday 2 September's programme, Gilbert John explores a railway line rich with rare stories - the Heart of Wales line that runs from Swansea through the Amman Valley and on to Powys and Shropshire. The Heart of Wales railway line from Swansea to Shrewsbury travels through some of the most beautiful countryside of Mid Wales, has survived the Beeching axe and several closure attempts since. So, Gilbert John travelled along the line to learn more about its history and meet some of the characters who are helping to keep it going.
Passenger numbers have been given a boost in 2007 with a decision by the Welsh Assembly Government to allow bus pass holders in communities along the line to travel free.
It links communities which have virtually no bus services and offers tourists a chance to park the car and travel in comfort. Listeners to this programme will find out why a box or two of smoked fish travels on a dog ticket.
